Aashura should be observed on the 10th of Muharram according to Ru’yat (Actual Sighting) not according to calculation. (Ummul Qura Calendar).

The Wifaq ul Ulama see it as a responsibility that we guide our fellow Muslim Brothers on the right and correct path and we endeavour that ALL of us perform our ‘ibaadaat’ on the correct dates.

Guiding the Ummah on the correct path is an ‘Allah given responsibility’ to all Muslims especially the Ulama as mentioned in the Holy Qur’aan:

Our Members and other Muslims made an effort to sight the Hilal of Muharram here in the UK. But we have not received any positive sighting reports. We have received NOT news of actual sighting (muhaqaq ru'yat e basri) from anywhere else. Hence the Wifaqul Ulama hereby declare that the Month of Dhull Hijjah 1432 will have 30 days and the 1st of Muharram 1433 will be on Sunday 27th November 2011 Insha Allah.

This means the day of Ashorah (10th Of Muharram) will be on Tuesday 6th December 2011. Those who wish to fast on the day of Ashurah should do so on either Monday 5th December 2011 & Tuesday 6th December 2011 or Tuesday 6th December 2011 & Wednesday 7th December 2011

Muharram is the month with which the Muslims begin their lunar (Hijra) Calendar. It is one of the four sanctified months about which the Holy Quran Says....‘Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred…’Al Qur’aan 9: 36

The Noble Prophet (s.a.w) said: "The best of fasts besides the month of Ramadhan is the fasting of Allah's month of Muharram." (Muslim)
