The Syrian government, with the backing of Russia, is intentionally targeting its own people in Eastern Ghouta. I believe that this ban not only goes against basic human values of trust, compassion, tolerance and decency but will also prove to be an impediment in the fight against terrorism. I find that many in America such as Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina agree with my assessment. I urge our Prime Minister Theresa May to stand up for our fundamental British values and for her Government to take a much stronger stance in ensuring that this executive order is reversed, promptly. We subscribe to pluralism and peaceful coexistence and acknowledge the freedom and rights of every individual or community or race to believe as they choose to believe without coercion, fear and intimidation. Therefore, we unequivocally condemn the brutal killings of civilians in Syria. The harm to them is unbearable and must stop. We reflect the sentiments of Andrew Mitchell, a Conservative MP who co-chairs the parliamentary Friends of Syria, “The house should urgently discuss not ‘something must be done’, but ‘what in the name of humanity we, the international community, will do to save those who today are in such dreadful jeopardy."
