Itikāf during Coronavirus (COVID-19)

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh (Peace, Blessings & Mercy of Allah be upon You).

This issue was deliberated among Wifaqul Ulama and The Islamic Council of Europe and others. The scholars (including Shaykh Dr Haitham Al-Haddad) have reached an agreement and a statement is being issued on the 12th of May 2020  which supersedes all previous statements on the subject.

it is suggested that a minimum of at least two male key workers should perform the sunnah of Itikaf of Ramadhān 1441 for the full 10 days in the local mosque. if not possible, then as a minimum a single key worker should make the intention and perform it.

Key workers

The Cabinet Office guidance applicable to 31 May 2020 clearly states that as part of delivering “key public services”, the religious staff are classed as key workers. This isn’t just restricted to the Imām of the Mosque may also extend to those responsible for the IT systems (to transmit Adhān, prayers and religious programs etc) and security personnel. We strongly urge the Mosque committees to contact their local councils and public Health departments and inform them of the Itikaf plans.

The minimum recommended distance of two meters should be and can be easily maintained during Itikaf as the purpose is to seclude oneself. Religious guidance pertaining to Ramadhān is general and Itikaf in particular is covered in our Fiqh of Ramadhān.

Request for Prayers

We urge those who engage in the noble Sunnah of Itikaf to pray to Allah

  • To sustain, support and assist the anxious and the fearful;
  • To lift our spirits;
  • To comfort those who are isolated and feel vulnerable;
  • To grant speedy recovery to all those who are affected by Coronavirus (COVID-19);
  • To protect all from Coronavirus (COVID-19);
  • To deliver us soon from this disease and to protect us and our loved from all diseases and hardships;

Ameen.
