In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

This statement is being issued on the 01st of August 2019 and supersedes all previous statements on the subject.

Wifaqul Ulama has a set Moon sighting criteria and does not take Moon sighting news (globally) from anywhere on Earth. This information has been provided for research purposes only.

Moon sighting after Sunset:

Wifaqul Ulama is a British organisation. Thus all Moon sighting reports siginificantly after sunset (according to London) are not included in this report. This is no way to predict the actual sighting of the Moon at Los Angeles and it has no relevance to the decision making process for British Muslims.

Africa/Europe Research Project:

Wifaqul Ulama has bilateral moon sighting agreements with many countries in Europe and Africa. We have asked partners in the program to provide factual reports and will update the table with the results.

Indonesian Naked Eye Moon sighting: Dismissed by local Experts

The Ministry of Religious Affair of Indonesia has just announced that Eid-ul-Adha 1440 AH will be on Sunday, 11 August 2019. The announcement was made after several people claimed that they saw the crescent moon (hilal) of the 1 Dhul-Hijjah 1440 AH this evening. The reported positive sightings were received from several places in Java island. There were no photographic evidence of the claimed hilal sightings, though. Some Indonesian experts in astronomy expressed their disbelieve of such naked-eye sighting reports from Java island as the moon is physically very close to the sun and would even cannot be sighted through ordinary telescope.

Oman Declaration:

Moon sighting committees in Oman have not been able to see the Dhul Hijja moon for AH1440, according to Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs. The main committee of the Hilal Vision Survey for 1440 announced that the crescent is not confirmed. This means that the first day of Dhul Hijja, 1440 will fall on Saturday, August 3rd, and that the first day of Eid Al Adha will fall on Monday, August 12.

UAE Declaration:

The festival of Eid Al Adha will begin on Sunday, August 11, after the crescent moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia on Thursday evening. The sighting of the moon indicates that Friday, August 2, would be Zul Hijjah 1. The crescent was reportedly seen from Saudi Arabia’s Tumair observatory.
